Howe's City Council on Tuesday night ratified the resignation of Police Chief Jake Sullivan and took the first steps toward hiring his successor, KXII reported. The council gave no further comment on why he is leaving.
It is the third time since mid-2024 that the city has had to look for a police chief, according to the station. Longtime chief Carl Hudman was fired in July 2024, and the interim chief brought in after him quit within about two weeks. Sullivan was hired that October after a search of several months and served about two years.
What the city wants
City Administrator Monte Walker told KXII the city hopes to find someone with experience comparable to Sullivan's and a strong connection to the community. He said residents are welcome to contact him or city staff about the qualities they want in the next chief.
"Ultimately it's their city, so we're going to cater to them and their needs and their wants," Walker told the station.
He also said the next chief will need to work closely with the fire department, public works and the rest of city staff as Howe grows.
