Grayson County's animal control unit could gain a full-time officer next week if commissioners sign off on a budget shuffle Tuesday.
The Health Department has asked the Commissioners Court to convert its part-time animal control officer to a full-time position and to amend the county's 2027 salary order to match. The item, sponsored by Precinct 2 Commissioner Art Arthur, is on the agenda for the court's 10 a.m. meeting Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Commissioners Courtroom.
Where the money comes from
A budget amendment request dated Oct. 1 would move $75,159 into animal control. Of that, $58,564 would cover salary and $16,595 would pay for benefits, including nine months of health insurance, with the change taking effect Oct. 10.
The county would draw the money from three places, according to the request:
- $35,134 already budgeted for the part-time animal control job.
- $30,160 in part-time salaries for the Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 office that the request says were placed in the budget by mistake.
- $9,865 from a vacant indigent health clerk position, which the request says will stay unfilled for seven extra pay periods.
The county's current salary order lists two animal control officers at $59,969 a year each and a part-time officer paid $24.23 an hour.
Shelter contract payment
The same agenda asks commissioners to approve a $59,000 payment to All American Dogs, a Pilot Point company, for animal control and sheltering services in the 2027 fiscal year. The company's invoice, dated Oct. 1 and attached to the agenda, bills the full amount for sheltering.
