A recent study from Southern Methodist University, led by Khaled Abdelghany, suggests that fully autonomous vehicles could potentially decrease traffic delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth area by as much as 33 percent, without the need for additional highway lanes. This research was supported by the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and partially funded by the region's council of governments.
The study involved 25 experiments that modeled traffic conditions in 2045, testing various levels of autonomous vehicle adoption. In scenarios where 100 percent of vehicles were autonomous, researchers found that traffic delays could be reduced significantly, with hours spent in congested traffic decreasing by at least 19 percent.
The underlying principle is that human drivers often create traffic jams through inconsistent driving behaviors. Khaled Abdelghany noted that autonomous vehicles could help alleviate these issues through smoother and more coordinated driving patterns. In a 2024 ranking, Dallas was identified as the 17th most congested city in the United States, with drivers losing approximately 36 hours annually to traffic.
Texas is already at the forefront of driverless vehicle technology, particularly in freight transport. Aurora Innovation launched commercial driverless deliveries between Dallas and Houston in April 2025, marking the first such service in the U.S. These trucks operate along the I-45 corridor, which is a critical route for truck freight in Texas.
Aurora has since expanded its operations to include a second route from Fort Worth to El Paso and plans to deploy hundreds of trucks.
Other companies, including Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, Gatik, Plus, and Waabi, are also developing autonomous trucking solutions in Texas, solidifying the state's position as a leader in this emerging industry. On the passenger side, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and has recently extended its services to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
While the rise of driverless vehicles raises questions about job displacement, the industry emphasizes that new roles will emerge. Positions will include technicians for vehicle maintenance, remote operators for fleet monitoring, and staff for logistics. Estimates suggest that the autonomous vehicle sector could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and create around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.
However, the study's promising 33 percent reduction in traffic is contingent on full adoption of autonomous vehicles, which is not expected in the near term. Research from MIT indicates that many autonomous vehicle operating hours may occur without passengers, and studies from the University of California, Davis suggest a correlation between increased autonomous vehicle use and declining public transit ridership.
