Later, a fielding error by Houston’s shortstop allowed a run to cross the plate that proved decisive in the final tally.
Offensive Breakdown
Houston took an early lead in the top of the first inning. Corey Julks hit into a fielder's choice to right field, allowing Fernando Tatis Jr. to score while Wil Myers advanced to third. The Astros’ offense continued to apply pressure in the second inning when Yordan Alvarez homered to right-center field, measuring 409 feet. This tie-breaking blast leveled the contest at 1-1.
San Diego responded in the bottom of the third with its own power display. Jackson Merrill launched a home run to center field, traveling 421 feet, to give the Padres a 2-1 advantage. The lead was extended in the fourth inning when a defensive error by Houston shortstop Peña allowed Myers to score from second base after Tatis Jr. reached first safely on the play.
The error made the score 3-1 San Diego.
Houston attempted a late rally in the ninth inning. Jeremy Pena singled to left field, advancing to second base, and eventually scored on a single by Yuli Gurriel, bringing the final margin to 3-2. Despite the late pressure, the Padres’ bullpen held firm to preserve the win.
