University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks is facing two criminal cases, with one involving an accusation that a pregnant person was assaulted. He appeared in court Monday, where Nariah Harley asked that prosecutors dismiss the charge and said police misunderstood what happened.
Harley told the judge that an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week. She said Brooks repeatedly told her to leave, then picked her up and put her outside when she refused. According to Harley, Brooks called police himself because she would not leave.
She said Brooks is the father of her baby, but she does not consider herself a victim, and asked for all charges to be dismissed so they could move forward.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said officers’ body-camera recordings captured the encounter. Prosecutors are expected to review that footage and Brooks’ 911 call, he said. The other case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County, in which Brooks allegedly damaged a door handle, resulting in a criminal mischief charge.
Family members said Brooks and the other woman and her sister grew up together in Killeen and went to high school together. Harley is also from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University. Wasserstein said Brooks is suspended from the football team during the cases and hopes he can attend classes.
