Baylor's head coach Dave Aranda is gearing up for the 2026 season amid considerable pressure to improve upon a disappointing record. Following the resignation of the athletic director last season, his future with the program became uncertain. Aranda's overall coaching record stands at 36-37, including a 5-7 finish last year, where the team struggled with a three-game losing streak.
Entering his seventh season, Aranda will implement changes, including a new quarterback, DJ Lagway, who transferred from Florida, and a new defensive coordinator, Joe Klanderman, previously with Kansas State. The Bears have faced challenges since their successful 2021 season, which saw them achieve a school-record 12 wins and a Big 12 championship.
Their performance has declined since then, with a record of 22-28, and only one winning season in 2024.
Despite losing their leading rusher, Bryson Washington, to Auburn, the running back group remains strong, featuring Caden Knighten and returning player Dawson Pendergrass. However, the team faces challenges in the receiving corps, having lost their top five receivers from last season. Six new receivers have joined the roster, with Jadon Porter being the most experienced returning player.
Baylor's season opener against Auburn is set for September 5 in Atlanta, followed by significant matchups against TCU and No. 12 Texas Tech later in the season.
