Texas Tech plans to keep using quarterback packages for Tommy Castellanos, while coach Joey McGuire said Will Hammond remains the Red Raiders’ starter. Castellanos has produced three touchdowns this season, but his use alongside Hammond has included both productive plays and a turnover.
Against Houston last Friday, Castellanos threw an interception on his first play while trying to throw the ball out of bounds, Red Raiders Wire reported. He later entered again inside the red zone and ran 3 yards for a touchdown.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech late in preseason camp as an emergency backup after the transfer portal had closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had ended. Hammond continues to recover from a torn ACL, according to the report. Sports Illustrated writer Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ role as one of 10 questions that could influence the college football season.
Texas Tech has not determined how it will use Castellanos going forward, including whether he will continue appearing near the goal line.
