A defense attorney representing former TCU football player Jacob Fields has alleged that the coaching staff was aware of growing tensions on the practice field before a locker room fight that occurred on August 13. Fields faces an aggravated assault charge after reportedly injuring teammate Dozie Ezukanma, who required hospitalization for three days due to a brain bleed.
Attorney Coby DuBose challenges the assertions made in the arrest warrant affidavit, which states that Fields struck Ezukanma unexpectedly. DuBose claims that Fields approached Ezukanma to greet him before the altercation ensued. He argues that Fields had previously communicated his concerns to the coaching staff regarding rough treatment during practices, emphasizing that Fields had expressed being fed up with the cheap shots he was receiving.
DuBose contends that the TCU coaching staff did not take the situation seriously and could have acted to avert the fight. He described the events leading to the incident as exceeding typical football roughness, citing examples of spitting and illegal hits. Supporting DuBose's claims, Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller, noted that there was unnecessary aggression during practices.
