Nate Bennett will take Baylor's first-team quarterback role against Prairie View A&M in Week 2, beginning his first college start, Pete Thamel reported. DJ Lagway is unavailable because of a high-ankle sprain sustained in the season opener against Auburn.
Lagway completed 27 of 54 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in Baylor's 17-16 defeat. He remained in the game after injuring the ankle. Earlier in the week, coach Dave Aranda had characterized Lagway's status as day to day. On3 reported that Lagway had tried to play through the injury, though he was considered doubtful for the Prairie View A&M matchup.
Baylor is 0-1 after scoring a late touchdown against Auburn and then missing a two-point try that would have produced a victory. It was not clear whether Lagway's condition influenced that decision. The Bears will host Louisiana Tech next weekend and then open Big 12 play against Colorado on Sept. 26. No additional recovery timeline for Lagway was provided.
