The Houston Texans are currently in contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud, who is asking for an annual salary of $70 million. In contrast, the Texans have proposed a range between $50 million and $55 million.

If Stroud's request is fulfilled, he would become the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history, exceeding the current record of $64 million per year held by Patrick Mahomes. While the Texans' offer is still considerable, it allows for more financial flexibility compared to Stroud's expectations.

Stroud enjoyed a successful rookie season, earning the Offensive Rookie of the Year title and helping the Texans secure a playoff victory. However, his performance has faced challenges, particularly highlighted by a playoff match against the New England Patriots in 2025 where he threw four interceptions.

This decline in form has made the upcoming 2026 season crucial for both his on-field performance and the ongoing contract talks.

The Texans are cautious about committing to a $70 million deal due to Stroud's recent inconsistencies. While he has the talent to justify such a salary, the team must consider whether he has proven enough reliability to warrant that investment. As negotiations progress, both sides may face a lengthy process, with Stroud unlikely to accept a much lower offer.
