The Dallas Cowboys have announced the release of quarterback Joe Milton as of Monday. Milton joined the team in April 2025 after a trade that sent a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots. He had been vying for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell during the offseason.

Earlier that same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which required Milton's release to fit Demercado into the 53-man roster. In the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, completing 29 passes out of 43 attempts for a total of 378 yards, along with three touchdown passes and no interceptions.

He also had 12 rushing attempts for 14 yards, including one rushing touchdown.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer noted his belief in Milton and Howell as solid backup options. He recalled a discussion with Milton that showcased his confidence in his skills. Schottenheimer acknowledged the difficulty of mastering the team's intricate offensive system, which demands a deep understanding from quarterbacks.

Milton remarked on his growing comfort with the Cowboys' offense, stating that after a full season and a second training camp, he felt more at ease. He highlighted the significance of grasping the playbook and executing plays effectively.

Following Milton's departure, the Cowboys' quarterback roster includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton will be placed on waivers, and if unclaimed, he may have the chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad.
