BJ Edwards, previously a guard for the SMU Mustangs, has committed to join the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision follows a report by Joe Tipton of On3 and comes as Edwards gains an extra season of college basketball eligibility due to a five-for-five temporary injunction affecting the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards played three seasons at SMU in Dallas after a brief stint at the University of Tennessee, where he participated in only 14 games before transferring. At SMU, he contributed significantly under two head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield.
His most successful season was last year, where he played in 28 games and averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game, despite facing injuries. Edwards also earned All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, showcasing his defensive skills with an average of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season.
Although SMU sought to keep him, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to strengthen their roster after a 21-16 overall record last season, missing out on an NCAA Tournament invitation. Edwards' addition is anticipated to enhance the team's competitiveness for the upcoming winter season.
