A recent ruling by a Georgia appeals court has granted the NCAA a stay on previously issued injunctions, immediately affecting the eligibility status of several college basketball players. This legal development places Texas Tech forward Jamichael Stillwell in an ineligible position, disrupting his planned transition to the Red Raiders program.
Stillwell, a former UCF player, had successfully recruited to Lubbock after Grant McCasland announced his intention to play a fifth year. The move was initially secured through a courtroom victory that allowed athletes from the 2022 recruiting class to claim an additional year of eligibility under revised NCAA guidelines.
However, the NCAA has consistently challenged these decisions, seeking to reverse the rulings that granted the extra season.
According to a report by Jon Rothstein, the stay currently renders five key players ineligible: RJ Godfrey of Arizona, Chauncey Wiggins of Gonzaga, Jamichael Stillwell of Texas Tech, Dillon Hunter of Clemson, and Dan Skillings of Grand Canyon. This situation mirrors the recent experience of fellow Texas Tech player Donovan Atwell, who was also halted by a stay granted in Colorado.
The outcome of these legal battles remains uncertain. If the NCAA secures a favorable ruling in Texas, it would present a significant obstacle for both Stillwell and Atwell. The Texas Tech program is currently working to resolve these eligibility issues before the start of the season, as the team is considered a top contender if all roster pieces are available for play.
