The New England Patriots have traded wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans. In return, the Patriots acquired Jaylen Reed along with a seventh-round draft pick set for 2028.
At 24 years old, Boutte faced stiff competition for playing time after the Patriots added AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs to their roster. Other wide receivers, including DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism, further restricted his opportunities on the field.
Head coach Mike Vrabel stated that this move would provide Boutte with a more significant role with the Texans, where he could contribute more effectively than he could in New England. He acknowledged the depth at the wide receiver position, saying it was a beneficial trade for all involved.
Without injuries to other players, Boutte was likely to remain inactive during games, primarily due to his limited special teams experience. Last season, he played in 14 games, achieving 33 receptions for 551 yards and six touchdowns.
Vrabel expressed that trading Boutte was a tough decision, highlighting his positive attitude and development as a player. As Boutte joins the Texans, he is expected to back up established starters Nico Collins, Xavier Hutchinson, and Jaylin Noel, although his specific role in Houston remains uncertain.
