In 2025, the Cowboys faced challenges under former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, ranking last in the NFL for opponent passing yards and points allowed. The team also finished 30th in total yards allowed and tied for 22nd in sacks. However, with Christian Parker now at the helm as the new defensive coordinator, the Cowboys have adopted a different mindset and strategy.
Williams emphasized that daily practices against a strong offense have greatly aided their defensive growth.
The Cowboys secured Williams with a three-year, $105.9 million contract extension in August, making him one of the highest-paid interior defensive linemen in the league. Last season, he recorded 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception, and 53 combined tackles over 15 games.
Additionally, the Cowboys have strengthened their defense through key signings, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, along with veteran linebacker Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers. In the 2026 NFL Draft, they selected safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence to further enhance their defensive capabilities.
