Houston Texans cornerback Jaylin Smith now faces a $6,223 fine instead of the original $7,779 penalty, following a successful appeal. The issue involved an unauthorized shoe logo during warmups before a preseason matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders. The available report does not identify the logo.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 reported the decision Sept. 12, before Houston’s regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills. The NFL classified the matter as Smith’s first offense and said he had an opportunity to fix the uniform issue, but determined that a reduced fine was still appropriate. The league’s listed first-offense penalties for uniform violations involving socks, jerseys and undergarments are $5,971.
A first unauthorized-logo or intellectual-property violation can result in a fine as high as $11,941.
Smith may qualify for a full refund at season’s end under a policy the NFL Players Association announced in August. That provision covers players with one offense in eligible categories, though the NFLPA has not specified those categories. Since the incident occurred on the playing surface during warmups, it could be considered on-field conduct.
To receive reimbursement, Smith would have to avoid another applicable violation during the rest of the 2026 regular season. The policy’s effect on this particular fine remains undetermined.
