The SMU Mustangs are bolstering their wide receiver lineup with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale, who comes from Alabama, and Yannick Smith, previously with East Carolina. This move follows the departure of their top two receivers from last season, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns before graduation.

Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently recovering from a hand injury, which has limited his ability to work with several important offensive players, such as tight ends Matthew Hibner and RJ Maryland, along with running backs TJ Harden and Chris Johnson Jr. Despite these setbacks, both Hale and Smith have shown significant potential during training.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins commended Smith for his ability to secure contested catches, attributing this to his size, while also highlighting Hale's speed and skill in avoiding defenders. Hale, a former five-star recruit, had a strong start at Alabama but missed the entire 2024 season due to a serious knee injury. He has since regained his form at SMU, demonstrating his explosive playmaking skills.

Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's experience in the SEC and his toughness, which he believes will enhance the team's offensive strategy. Smith, who has accumulated 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns during his time at East Carolina, is recognized for his aggressive playing style and knack for making challenging catches, aligning well with the Mustangs' deep passing game.

In addition to the new transfers, senior Yamir Knight returns after an impressive showing in the Holiday Bowl, where he earned the Offensive MVP title. Sophomore Jalen Cooper is also expected to take on a more significant role following a successful freshman year.

With two weeks of fall camp remaining before facing Florida State on September 7, the team is concentrating on developing chemistry and finalizing their depth chart.

Cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward commented on the competitive environment fostered by Hale and Smith, noting that their involvement is elevating the team’s overall performance. The newcomers have posed challenges for the defense, signaling a promising outlook for the Mustangs' passing game.
