Southern Methodist University (SMU) has appointed Derek Gossler as the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's strategy to improve its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by prioritizing revenue generation, which is essential in contemporary college athletics.
Gossler brings extensive experience, having worked in fundraising, ticketing, and commercial strategy for more than 15 years. His most recent position was at the University of Wyoming, where he served as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer. There, he successfully boosted cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and achieved record levels of ticket revenue and premium seating.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler played a key role at the U.S. Air Force Academy, contributing to five consecutive years of record fundraising. He also made significant impacts at Arizona State University, where he was involved in raising $86 million during a major fundraising campaign and helped establish the men's hockey program through substantial donor support.
Gossler's diverse background in various athletic departments equips him to address SMU's needs as it competes in a prominent and affluent market. He aims to enhance revenue through innovative strategies while strengthening connections with fans, supporters, and corporate partners. As SMU continues to elevate its athletic programs nationally, Gossler's appointment underscores a commitment to advancing revenue generation during the Mustangs' transition into the ACC.
Further details on his specific plans for SMU's athletic revenue generation have not yet been revealed.
