Texas Christian University (TCU) has reinstated the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's media credentials, resolving a dispute that arose from a locker room incident involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. The altercation occurred on August 13, resulting in Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
Ezukanma sustained serious injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, requiring a three-day hospitalization. TCU indicated that productive discussions led to the decision to restore credentials, which had been revoked after the Star-Telegram's reporting on the incident drew significant attention. The newspaper initially cited an unnamed source suggesting Fields was targeted by teammates, but later revised this to remove implications of bullying.
Athletic director Mike Buddie raised concerns about the narrative created by the reporting, which he stated led to threats against Fields and his family. After the revocation, the Star-Telegram could not cover TCU athletic events, including the season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, although a reporter still attended the game without official credentials.
TCU's restoration of media access aims to shift the focus back to the football season, despite ongoing legal issues related to the incident.
