The Houston Texans have officially designated Justin Watson as a starter due to the season-ending injury of Jayden Higgins, who has a torn ACL. Watson, a veteran wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion, is starting his second season with the Texans after a challenging first year marred by injuries.

Watson's new position on the depth chart has sparked significant interest, particularly as he is set to play alongside two-time Pro Bowler Nico Collins. Jeremy Beadling from Texans Today noted that while Watson's elevation may not be shocking, it does prompt questions regarding his likelihood of making the final 53-man roster. Last year, Watson was part of the team but faces uncertainty this season.

The Texans' decision comes in light of their recent trade for Kayshon Boutte. ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime indicated that the team is likely to retain six receivers, which would include Watson. However, the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander mentioned that Watson could be at risk of being cut following this trade.

As the Texans gear up for their last preseason game against the Panthers, Watson's ability to perform will be crucial. His 6-foot-2 frame and familiarity with the Texans' offense may provide him an edge over Boutte, who is 5-foot-11. To secure his position on the roster, Watson must show productivity and stay healthy.

The team is also anticipating Higgins' return in 2027 and hopes to have Tank Dell back soon, although his status is currently unclear.
