The Houston Texans have declared that contract discussions with quarterback C.J. Stroud will cease once the regular season kicks off. General manager Nick Caserio noted that if an agreement is not finalized before the team's first game against Buffalo on September 13, negotiations will be postponed until the following offseason.
Stroud, who was the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has had his fifth-year option exercised, which secures his contract with the Texans through 2027. Although Caserio had previously mentioned the possibility of an extension before the season began, no deal has been reached.
At just 24 years old, Stroud boasts a record of 28 wins and 18 losses, leading the Texans to playoff appearances in each of his initial three seasons.
He was honored as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023 and recorded a career-high completion percentage of 64% in 2025, contributing to the team's impressive 12-5 season and a spot in the divisional playoffs. Nonetheless, he encountered difficulties during the postseason, particularly in a 28-16 defeat against New England, where he threw five interceptions. Further information regarding future negotiations remains undisclosed.
