The Texas Tech Red Raiders established control early at Galaxy Stadium, leveraging a stifling defensive performance alongside efficient offense to defeat the Sam Houston Bearkats 49-14 on Saturday. The game was effectively decided in the second quarter when Texas Tech safety Austin Romaine returned two interceptions for touchdowns, shifting the momentum irreversibly in favor of the home team.
Romaine’s first turnover came midway through the period, a 15-yard return that extended Tech’s lead to 14-0. He followed it shortly thereafter with a 31-yard pick-six, pushing the margin to 21-7 after Sam Houston managed to score on its own offensive drive.
These two special teams scores accounted for 14 of Texas Tech’s points in the quarter and highlighted the Bearkats' inability to protect their quarterback against Tech's aggressive secondary.
Offensive Balance Sustains Lead
While the defense provided quick points, the Red Raiders’ offense maintained pressure throughout the contest. Quarterback Will Hammond orchestrated the passing attack, completing 17 of 29 attempts for 224 yards and one touchdown before throwing three interceptions of his own. His connection with Coy Eakin resulted in a 21-yard scoring strike in the third quarter.
Running back Cameron Dickey proved crucial on the ground, carrying the ball 12 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns. Dickey’s first score came in the opening period on a 1-yard run, capped by a kick from Stone Harrington. He added another in the third quarter with a 13-yard run, giving Tech a commanding 28-14 advantage entering the final period.
