Grayson County residents who register vehicles or pay property taxes will eventually do that business in a different downtown Sherman building. The county has registered a $700,000 renovation of 119 W. Houston St. with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, describing the project as space for its tax office.
According to the filing, posted Oct. 30, the work is an interior renovation of an existing one-story building of 9,816 square feet that will house both the vehicle tax and property tax sides of the Tax Assessor-Collector's office. The scope lists new interior walls and doors, finishes, millwork, interior glass, ceilings and lighting, along with new public transaction counters.
Construction is scheduled to begin Nov. 18 and wrap up July 9, 2027, an estimated timeline of just under eight months. The project uses public money, and Grayson County is listed as the owner. Hidell and Associates Architects of Carrollton is the design firm.
County spending reports already treat the address as the tax office's future home. Bills approved by commissioners for October include an electric account for the 119 W. Houston St. building and small purchases of air filters, block filler and painting supplies labeled "New Tax Office."
The filing does not say when the office will open to the public at the new location or how service will be handled while the work is underway. Nothing in the filing changes where residents go for tax business today.
