Pitching Dominance Sets the Stage
Stephen Kolek delivered a masterful performance on the mound, securing his fourth win of the season while holding the Houston Astros hitless over the final 6.2 innings. The Kansas City Royals right-hander allowed just five hits and one walk while striking out four batters across 7.1 innings of work. Kolek’s efficiency allowed the Royals’ offense to focus on capitalizing on early opportunities without pressure to generate a large lead. He was supported by Steven Cruz, who earned his first save by pitching 0.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout, and Daniel Lynch IV, who closed the game with a perfect 1.0 inning, striking out zero but allowing no hits or walks.
Early Offense Provides Cushion
The Royals’ scoring output came entirely in the first three innings, fueled by key hits from their lineup. In the top of the first, Garcia singled to left field, driving in Witt Jr. to give Kansas City an early 1-0 advantage. The momentum continued into the third inning when Caglianone singled to right, scoring Collins to extend the lead to 2-0. Jensen advanced to second base during the play, setting the stage for the decisive moment. Shortly after, Garcia doubled to left field, bringing home both Caglianone and Jensen to push the score to 4-0. This four-run frame proved sufficient, as the Royals’ defense and pitching staff maintained the shutout for the remainder of the contest.
