Decisive Offensive Explosion
James Wood’s four-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be the turning point in a high-scoring affair that saw the Washington Nationals defeat the Houston Astros 12-11 at Nationals Park. The decisive blow came with the score tied 6-8 in the bottom of the fifth, as Wood connected on a 446-foot shot to center field. The launch cleared the bases, sending in Crews, Young, and Nuñez to give the home team a 12-6 lead. It was a massive swing that shifted the momentum entirely, as the Astros would never fully recover from the deficit despite their own offensive firepower.
Early Inning Scoring
The game began with back-and-forth action in the first inning. Walker opened the scoring for Washington with a double to center field, driving in Paredes for a 1-0 advantage. The Astros responded immediately in the top of the frame, with Mead doubling to center to score Wood, tying the game at 1-1. Houston took control in the second inning when Altuve launched a 372-foot home run to left field. The blast was a three-run shot, scoring Shewmake and Matthews, and giving the visitors a 4-1 lead. Diaz followed up in the third inning with a two-run homer to left (389 feet), extending Houston’s advantage to 6-1. However, the Nationals began to chip away at the lead later in the third. After García Jr. doubled to left to score Nuñez and Mead singled to left to score Wood, making it 6-3, Abrams launched a three-run home run to right field (392 feet). This pivotal play tied the game at 6-6.
