Homeowners in Howe are beginning the process of recovery after severe weather likely caused by a tornado swept through Grayson County late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service is scheduled to inspect three locations on Wednesday, including Howe, to confirm the extent of the destruction.
Emergency personnel and utility workers spent Wednesday clearing fallen trees and repairing power lines that were tangled with metal and insulation. Police Chief Carl Hudman confirmed early Wednesday that several residences sustained damage. He noted that a metal storage building company on the east side of town was completely destroyed.
Dozens of families are evaluating the condition of their properties, with more than a dozen homes suffering significant harm from high winds. Terri Calhoun, who has lived in the area for 25 years, described hearing a loud roar that woke her and her husband while they were sleeping.
She said the noise was like a suction force and did not know what else could have caused such destruction.
Maria Tapia and her two sons took shelter in a bathroom when their house collapsed. The family lost their farm during the event, and Tapia sustained a back injury but has since been released from the hospital. A litter of puppies in the barn survived the incident.
