No. 13 Texas Tech is 3-0 and 1-0 in the Big 12 after edging No. 22 Houston, 28-26. The Red Raiders stopped quarterback Conner Weigman and the Cougars on a late possession near the goal line to secure the victory. Texas Tech will face Sam Houston next week in its last nonconference game and will have an extra recovery day following the Friday-night game.
Houston took a 10-0 lead as Texas Tech struggled on both sides of the ball. The Red Raiders improved defensively after halftime and overcame several long Houston drives. The win was Texas Tech’s Big 12 opener.
Defensive end Trey White played his first game for Texas Tech after transferring from San Diego State and recovering from a knee injury. He had a sack of Weigman. Adam Trick recorded two sacks, and returning All-American A.J.
Holmes Jr. had one. Veteran defensive back Brenden Jordan also returned after missing the opening two games because of an internal rules violation. Coach Joey McGuire said both players provided important help as the team replaces several starters from last year’s defense who went to the NFL.
McGuire said White was still not fully healthy and might have played more snaps than planned. Asked if the defense could equal the 2025 unit, he said, “Give me two more games,” citing White’s health and Jordan’s continued play.
