Van Alstyne, Texas, hosted a Fourth of July parade on Saturday, marking the first such event in the city since 2011. The procession featured more than 70 entries moving through downtown streets, accompanied by sirens and displays of American flags. Van Alstyne is located approximately 6 miles south of Howe.
City officials described the event as a significant celebration tied to the United States' 250th birthday. Mike Shaw, the city’s marketing and media manager, stated that organizers aimed to make the occasion memorable. He noted that the community had anticipated the event for a full year and expressed a determination to demonstrate strong patriotic sentiment.
Kandi Hessel, the city’s events and recreation manager, highlighted the competitive nature of the parade. She observed that the large number of participants indicated that local groups remained engaged and eager to participate. The return of the parade was intended to serve as the beginning of a recurring tradition rather than a single occurrence.
Following the procession, the American Legion Post 376 recognized a local individual as the hometown hero. Richard McCabe, the post’s commander, explained that the selection process focuses on identifying veterans who are active in the community. The criteria prioritize individuals who work closely with residents and have local ties.
The day’s activities concluded with evening entertainment. Shaw mentioned that music and fireworks were scheduled to continue the festivities after dark. Organizers expressed hope that the successful turnout would encourage families to attend future parades, establishing a lasting annual custom.
