Retired Air Force veterans Mark and Nancy Thomson marked the United States 250th anniversary by recreating scenes from the nation’s founding at a First United Bank location in Sherman. The couple used the occasion to highlight the challenges faced by early delegates who sought independence from Great Britain and worked to unite the original thirteen colonies.
Mark Thomson, dressed as Thomas Jefferson, the primary author of the Declaration of Independence, spoke to the crowd about the difficulties of that era. He emphasized the importance of patriotism in maintaining national unity. Nancy Thomson appeared in the role of Betsy Ross, the upholsterer and flag-maker credited with creating the first American flag. She discussed how the flag serves as a symbol of unity and how American ideals influence neighboring nations.
The couple expressed their view that understanding the nation’s origins is essential for appreciating current freedoms. They noted that the progress made over centuries and the maintenance of liberty are tied to the courage of those who sought independence. Mark Thomson described the founders as impressive figures whose lessons remain relevant.
Mark Thomson stated that the couple loves their country and continues to serve the community through their veteran status and public engagement. He described the upcoming Fourth of July as a significant milestone, referring to it as the big two-five-zero celebration.
Sherman is located approximately 9 miles north of Howe.
